I've recieved an email from Sara-chan.

Dear Chi-chan,
       I've been wanting to enter Algebra 1. The only problem is with fractions. Please help!

Your fan,
Sara

Hey Sara! I can help you with that, because I am in Algebra 1. It's cool how you admited you needed help! Fractions can be extremly tricky! When I couldn't see the board in class, I never got to learn how to solve fractions with the help. I can do it now.

Call me Shiraishi sensei

Let start with a easy problem.

1/2 + 2/3x = 6

First we need to find the common denominator.

The common denominator is 6.

Now we multipy the common denominator with both sides for the equation.

1/2(6) + 2/3x(6) = 6(6)

Let's start off with 1/2
6 divded by 2(The denominator of 1/2) is 3.
3 times 1(The numerator of 1/2) equals 3.
The replacement of 1/2 is now 6.

1/2: 6 / 2 = 3
 3 x 1 = 3
1/2 x 6 = 3

Now let's do 2/3x
6 divded by 3 is 2.
2 times 2 is 4.
The replacement of 2/3x is 4x

Lastly for 6
I shouldn't need to explain this, but 6x6=36

Solve the new equation

3 + 4x = 36
-3             -3
__________
4x = 33
__      __
4         4
x = 33/4

Answer

X = 33/4

Tada! That was easy! I hope you make it in Algebra 1 Sara-chan!

Practice problems

1. 2/3 + 1/2x = 5

2. 2/5a + 2/10 = 1

3. 1/2c + 3/4 = 11

4. 3/4s - 1/8 = 47/8

Challenge: -2/3b + 4/6 = 4

Tip: The x is always on the left side of the equations

Answers

1. x = 26/3

2. a = 2

3. c = 41/2

4. s = 8

5. b = -5
